[ It took Fitz a great deal of effort to drag himself out of bed (only half-literally), but he managed to make his way through the base, though at a snail's pace. He got pity glances from the others he passed, but he paid them no mind, checking first the cantina and even the entryway before he managed his way out to the hangar where their limited aircraft seemingly slept. He looked around and even called out for Jemma, before pausing and taking out his phone to snap a photo of the backends of the Zephyr and the Quinjet with the caption,

I think you just described my perfect holiday.

[ What in the world did he do to deserve Jemma Simmons? ]

Scotland? Really? Had you ever been before now? Any chance they'll let us go to Glasgow? There's this amazing Kebab shop I've got to show you, if it's still there..

[ It had been years since he'd been home, and since he'd seen his mum. He would like to make time for that... and to properly introduce her to Simmons... but that might have to wait until things were a bit more... settled and concrete. He's still having trouble believing something's not just going to rip her away from him any moment. ]

Or just a quiet hotel, privacy, ocean sounds, you and me... sounds nice. And I could always use the practice.

[He may be thinking it, but she’s going to broach the subject properly.]

Do you think we could take one of those days for me to meet your mum?

[ They really dis share the same mind, and with this surprise and her suggestion, he's not entirely sure he isn't dreaming. ]

[ He laughs, but he's really getting quite excited about it all now. ]

I can't wait. Did I forget that it's my birthday or something?

[Jemma smiles and nods.]

I’d love to meet her. She’s an impressive woman.

[This scrambling around to make this happen is all worth it to hear him laugh.]

No. I just saw the opportunity and I grabbed it. 96 hours all to ourselves. How could I pass it up.

[She tilts her head towards the Irn Bru. ]

That’s got to be getting heavy.

She really is. But you're impressive as well, so I'm sure you'll get on just fine. Just... maybe don't tell her all that we do? She worries. She doesn't know about the.. um.. the injury.

[ His eyes flick upward with a slight nod of his head. ]

I can't have her thinking her son's doing a dangerous job.

[ Jemma really does think of everything, and for that, he's extremely grateful, and he's constantly reminded of how much he loves her for it. ]

What, this? Not at all. I've been working out with Mack... It's not obvious?

[Jemma’s own parents don’t know the truth of her job either. Considering how much SHIELD has been in the news, she wonders if it’s willful ignorance. She also wonders how a woman who could raise Fitz on her own could be the same.

Still, she won’t mention the brain injury. ]

I won’t mention the more exciting bits about the job, but I will tell her how you reacted to that dead cat.

[Rule of biology, the more it oozes, the better it is to study.

Also, she will never let Fitz forget about the cat.

Reaching out, she feels his arms, in slight teasing, implying she’s not noticed.

She has, but she’s feeling playful.

The idea of Fitz working out with Mack only leads to one question.]

I’m sure it’s good to practice your planking as he bench presses you.

[ He can't help but to smile at her willingness to go along with his deception. Anyone else might have waffled on it, but Jemma gets him. And he's grateful. ]

What? Why? That's got nothing to do with her! Besides, she's got a cat, and I don't think she'd find it very funny!

[ He pouts a little, knowing that it is actually a pretty good story. Might make for some good rapport between them, even if it is at his expense. But soon enough she's squeezing his bicep, which he flexes a little for her. ]

Now that's just rude.

[It’s a great story and Jemma’s going to tell it, even if she just changes it to “animal” rather than a cat.

She would never breathe a word about his injury but his response to the cat is fair game.]

Then I’ll bring along a cat toy as a present.

[He’s adorable when he pouts.

So she whispers.]

Well, maybe I have to examine you more closely.

[ Her promising to bring a present for an animal she's never met is quite sweet, and his pout turns to a smile. ]

Maybe we both should. Or I should bring a cake.. or a pie. What's a better apology dessert that says, "sorry I haven't really spoken to you in 3 years"?

[ Jemma has always been an expert at pushing his buttons and getting exactly the reaction she wants out of him. ]

You keep talking to me like that and I might have to set the drinks down and carry you off instead.

[That’s a serious question and selfishly she’s glad it’s not one she has to deal yet with her own parents.

They need to meet Fitz though, but she thinks everyone would benefit from meeting Fitz.]

I think it would be the best present to spend the whole day with your mum.

And cake. Definitely cake.

[Pushing his buttons was one of her favourite hobbies, and one she takes every chance to perfect.]

To prove a point you’re going to leave your Irn Bru unprotected? Someone might steal it.

[ Maybe she's right. He'll have to call her later to let her know before it gets too late in Scotland. ]

I might. You're just that effective at what you do and you know it.

[ He grins a little and nudges her with his hip. ]

[She’d give her parents the whole day, even if they might embarrass her with—]

I’ll get to see all the pictures of tiny you. I’m going to love every minute of it.

[She laughs, whether it’s at the idea of him abandoning the Irn Bru or her ability to press his buttons, she’ll never reveal.]
